The museum, which was reopened in 1987, is located in the old town hall in the town centre. Its nucleus was established around 1420.
Main points of the extensive collection are the history of the town and its cultural, historic and economic characteristics. Documented are, for example, the results of the archaeological-historical research on the town as well as changes in the townscape. Numerous objects and exhibition ensembles tell about the style of home décor in Eckernförde, the guilds, trade and commerce as well as about the fishing industry. In the section “Bathing yesterday and today” the history of the Baltic seaside resort is presented. In a special section records on the history of the town between the Weimar Republic and the German Republic are exhibited: What happened during the Nazi period, and how did people survive war, displacement and hard times?
