High above the town the Museumsberg Flensburg emerges. Situated in an historic park the Heinrich-Sauermann-Haus and the Hans-Christiansen-Haus constitute one of the largest museums in Schleswig-Holstein. The furniture manufacturer Heinrich Sauermann founded it in 1876. The visitors get a comprehensive insight into the art and cultural history of the Schleswig region. Outstanding focal points are the abundant furniture collection, original farm living rooms, the unique collection of 19th-century paintings from Schleswig-Holstein and the Art Nouveau section with works of the artist Hans Christiansen, who was born in Flensburg. Another highlight is the Expressionism art with works by famous artists like Erich Heckel, Ernst Barlach and Emil Nolde. Special exhibitions are shown in addition to the permanent collections.
