The Schleswig-Holstein State Library is a publicly accessible institution for the entire state of Schleswig-Holstein and its citizens. As a scientific regional library, it has the task of collecting, archiving, indexing, sustainably preserving, bibliographically verifying, making accessible to the public and communicating media as well as images, photographs, manuscripts and much more relating to the history, regional studies, tradition and culture of Schleswig-Holstein and its direct neighbouring areas, in particular from Denmark.

In addition to its collection mandate, the State Library fulfils an important function in supporting digitisation in the state's cultural institutions with the Centre for Digitisation and Culture.
The State Library acts as a place of work, learning, education and communication, offering various educational programmes for the public and the cultural sector.
