Headed ‘cloth and technology’, the new building of the textile museum was opened on 13 October 2007 in the city centre of Neumünster. On about 2000 square metres the visitors can explore almost 2000 years of history, discover exciting exhibits and try out some of them.
Cloth, technology and Neumünster are the topics of the museum. Stories of people who lived and worked in Neumünster are told. Once a week a master handweaver shows how a hand loom is operated and produces cloth for the museum shop. Members of the museum staff demonstrate the impressive industrial textile machines regularly. Media stations give the possibility to: watch historical educational films, listen to interviews with textile workers and manufacturers of Neumünster and read background information. Visitors can try out spinning-wheels and looms themselves. They can also make laboratory experiments.
In addition to the permanent exhibition there will be smaller changing exhibitions on different aspects of textile production in Neumünster. Some will be prepared in co-operation with schools and adult education centres. Together with the educational institutions of the city, seminars and series of lessons on history and present time of cloth and technology in Neumünster are offered.
