The Otto von Bismarck Foundation is showing the exhibition ‘Otto von Bismarck and his time’ at Friedrichsruh Historical Railway Station. The life and politics of the Prussian-German statesman are explained in the context of the diverse developments in 19th century Germany. Bismarck was Prussian Prime Minister from 1862 to 1890 and the first German Chancellor from 1871 to 1890. He drove forward the process of nation state formation and the introduction of social insurance, established a European alliance system, but was also responsible for the suppression of social democracy and political Catholicism as well as ethnic minorities. On display are Bismarck's passport for his trip to St. Petersburg in 1859, the golden pen with which he signed the peace treaty with France in 1871, evidence of German colonial policy and knick-knacks that tell of the Bismarck myth.
