Description
Theodor Mommsen (1817 - 1903) received the Nobel Prize for Literature as the first German in 1902 for his extensive and still fundamental publications on Roman history and Roman constitutional law. Mommsen, who was a professor of law and a historian, came from the little village of Garding, which is located on the Eiderstedt Peninsula. A memorial with a small exhibition on the life and works of the scholar was established next to his birth house in 1987. In 2025, the exhibition moved to the Kulturhaus in the Old Town Hall in Garding, at Enge Straße 5.
