The Prinzeßhof District Museum is a central location for culture, history and education in the district of Steinburg. Located in the oldest professorial building in Itzehoe, the core of which dates back to the 16th century, the museum combines regional history with contemporary museum work.
The Prinzeßhof District Museum has a collection of regional historical objects, exhibits on everyday culture of the 19th and 20th centuries, important material on the history of industrialisation and works by regional artists such as Friedel Anderson, Wenzel Hab-lik and Ingeborg Blankenstein. The collection is complemented by archaeological finds and historical documents that provide a comprehensive insight into the development of Steinburg and Schleswig-Holstein.
Since the refurbishment and reopening in 2022, the museum has presented changing special exhibitions on regional and national themes. A particular focus is on the redesign of the permanent exhibition, which presents the diversity of the collection in a contemporary and appealing way. Digital media, such as a virtual reality application that can be used to visit the medieval hillfort in Itzehoe, bring the history of the region to life.
With educational programmes such as guided tours, workshops and events, the Prinzeßhof District Museum invites people of all ages to discover and actively experience the history of the region.

The Prinzesshof is the oldest secular building in Itzehoe. Its foundation dates back to the 16th century. The museum’s Biedermeier room demonstrates how people lived in the past while the estate of the Low German poet Johann Hinrich Fehrs is on display in the Fehrs room. In addition, special exhibitions examine changing topics.
