The Herzogtum Lauenburg District Museum is picturesquely situated on the Palmberg, between the cathedral and the A. Paul Weber Museum. The complex, originally planned as a summer residence, was commissioned by Duke Adolph Friedrich IV of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Since 1973, the Lauenburg Duchy District Museum has been housed in this unique complex, whose garden offers a fantastic view across the Domsee lake to the Ratzeburg suburbs with their Art Nouveau villas. Due to renovation work on the main building and the redesign of the permanent exhibition, only selected aspects of the history of the Duchy of Lauenburg can currently be viewed in the old coach house (northern annexe), including a pharmacy, the Hannig photography studio with its shop and darkroom, and the exhibition ‘The Spirit of the 1950s’.

Since 1973, the former summer residence of the dukes of Mecklenburg, built 1764-66, has housed the District Museum of the Duchy of Lauenburg. The museum features prehistoric artefacts, exhibits on the history of the Duchy of Lauenburg, and a depiction of the problems created by border between East and West Germany in recent history.
