Description
The Museum of Art and Cultural History at Gottorf Castle is part of the largest museum complex between Hamburg and Copenhagen. Its permanent exhibition in the castle showcases highlights of Schleswig-Holstein's art and cultural history from the Middle Ages to the present day.
However, Gottorf Castle is currently closed for renovation and modernisation of the exhibition. For this reason, the Museum of Art and Cultural History is currently focusing on spectacular special exhibitions by nationally and internationally renowned contemporary artists in the castle's former riding hall.https://schloss-gottorf.de/de/sonderausstellungen
With each change of museum director, a new focus was usually added to the collection. The Second World War brought about a major upheaval. The museum's holdings were moved to Schleswig, where the State Museum of Art and Cultural History (today: Museum of Art and Cultural History at Gottorf Castle) was opened as the successor to the Thaulow Museum.
The roots of the museum date back to 1875.
The roots of the Museum of Art and Cultural History at Gottorf Castle lie in the Thaulow Museum in Kiel, which was founded in 1875 and initially consisted of a collection of decorative arts. As with many museums of that time, it was the brainchild of a private collector – Gustav Ferdinand Thaulow.

The Gottorf Castle State Museum provides a unique look at one of the highlights of art and cultural history in Germany’s northernmost state. At the same time, the museum presents annual special exhibitions on nationally and internationally famous artists.
