Description
The Museum of Archaeology is part of the largest museum complex between Hamburg and Copenhagen. Outstanding finds, of which the museum is particularly proud, are presented in exciting special exhibitions and in the permanent exhibition in the castle.

However, Gottorf Castle is currently closed for renovation and modernisation of its exhibitions. For this reason, the Museum of Archaeology on Museum Island is currently focusing on a spectacular display in a hall directly adjacent to the castle:
it is exhibiting the famous Nydam boat – an impressive, well-preserved rowing boat from the Germanic era.

the Viking Museum Haithabu should also not be overlooked. It is located on historic grounds near the castle island and is affiliated with the Museum of Archaeology.

The Museum of Archaeology at Gottorf Castle has made a significant contribution to research into the prehistory and early history of Northern Europe in many different ways – and has received international recognition for its work. In the more than 180 years since it was founded, it has amassed more than 10 million finds from 80,000 years of human history.
