Description
The pottery trade had an outstanding importance in Preetz in the 17th and 18th century in addition to the goldsmith’s, pewterer’s and shoemaker’s trades. Extensive water and earth finds prove that Preetz played an important role in the production of the so-called “Probsteier Keramik” (Probstei pottery). The museum presents an impressive cross-section of this pottery. At the beginning of the 17th century the gold- and silversmith’s trades were also flourishing. The museum owns outstanding examples especially by masters of the 18th and 19th century. Other central topics of the museum are the presentation of the history of the aristocratic convent and the history of the town of Preetz. Concerning local archaeology, excavation finds from a women’s graveyard of the 2nd to the 4th century AD and remains of the Slav castle Scharsdorf are shown among other things. There are also changing presentations on local trade.
