Beschreibung
The Museum of Altona was founded in 1863. It is one of the largest regional museums within Germany. It deals with the art and cultural history of Northern Germany and presents the cultural development of the Elbe region around Altona, of Schleswig-Holstein and of the coastal areas along the North and Baltic Seas. The permanent exhibition shows the most important regional exhibits from the fields of painting and graphic arts, craftwork, cultural history, fishing and seafaring.
The museum offers a varied programme of special exhibitions, films and lectures on topics concerning the 19th and 20th century. At the same time, the museum aims at presenting its collections not only from the perspective of art and cultural history but also from the perspective of media history.
Since the interactive section for children was opened in 2006, the Museum of Altona has become a favourite destination for families.
Jenisch House is a branch of the Museum of Altona. This summer residence of Martin Johann Jenisch junior, once merchant and minister for building and conctruction in Hamburg, was built from 1831 to 1834 according to plans of Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Franz Gustav Forsmann. Today, Jenisch House is the location for changing exhibitions on the art and cultural history of especially the 19th century.
